PLEASE HELP! What is the significance of these quotes from “Their eyes were watching God” by Zora Hurston.10pt?
I can’t figure out these quotes.
“They huddled closer and stared at the door. They just didn’t use another part of their bodies, and they didn’t look at anything but the door. The time was past for asking the white folks what to look for through that door. Six eyes were questioning God.” Chapter 18, pg. 150
“Janie held his head tightly to her breast and wept and thanked him wordlessly for giving her the chance for loving service. She had to hug him tight for soon he would be gone, and she had to tell him for the last time. Then the grief of outer darkness descended.” Chapter 19, pg. 175
“Here was peace. She pulled in her horizon like a great fish-net. Pulled it from around the waist of the world and draped it over her shoulder. So much of life in its meshes! She called in her soul to come and see.” Chapter 20, pg. 184
Thank you so much:)
1. the first quote really reflects how these people (the blacks) viewed God. They really looked up to God because at this moment in history they really only had him. They look up to see what God will test them with how the wreath of God will affect them
2. The second has to do with how appreciative Janie is for Teacake. he is just what she always dreamed of. Joe didn’t treat her like an equal but teacake did and he didn’t take advantage of her money. their relationship was about love and Janie was able to open her heart up.
3. The third has to do with the fact that after this BIG journey. for her she achieved what she wanted and is at peace.
